If there’s one maneuver that separates a solid beginner from a true intermediate wingfoiler, it’s the gybe. Tacking (the upwind turn) is mostly about patience and balance. The gybe is different — it demands that you carve a foiling board through a downwind turn, manage your speed so the foil doesn’t stall or breach, and flip, release, and re-grab a wing, all while your board is doing the least stable thing it does all session.
The good news is that the gybe isn’t one single technique — it’s a family of related approaches, and different riders (and different conditions) call for different versions. Below is a breakdown of the main ways intermediates learn to gybe, followed by the technical keys that make any of them actually work.
Why the Gybe Is Harder Than It Looks
A wingfoil gybe asks you to solve three problems at once: keep the foil flying through a turn where your speed naturally drops, carve the board smoothly enough that the foil doesn’t breach or stall, and handle the wing — releasing your back hand, flipping the wing, and re-gripping on the new side — all within a two-to-three second window. Most riders find that isolating each of these problems separately, before trying to link them, is what finally makes the gybe click.
This is the technique nearly every rider learns first, and for good reason. You carve the board through the turn, let it settle back down onto the water as speed drops through the deepest part of the turn, complete the wing flip and hand change while the board is stable on the hull, and then pump back up onto the foil as you accelerate on the new tack.
Why it works: Splitting the turn into a “carve” phase and a “wing handling” phase removes a huge amount of pressure. You’re never trying to flip the wing while balancing on an unstable, flying foil. Most riders should master this version completely before chasing a flying gybe.
This is the version most intermediates are working toward: staying up on foil for the entire turn, without the board ever settling back onto the water. It requires carrying more entry speed into the turn than feels comfortable at first, since you need enough reserve speed to survive the natural slowdown mid-turn without the foil dropping out from under you.
Why it works: Speed is lift. Entering faster than feels natural, keeping the turn tight and progressive rather than wide and slow, and getting the wing flipped quickly (rather than gracefully) are what keep the foil flying. This one is earned through repetition of Method 1 first — it’s rarely the right place to start.
Unlike windsurfing or surfing, a wingfoil board is symmetrical and doesn’t care which way is “forward.” That opens up an option unique to foiling: carving through the entire turn without ever switching your foot position, and simply riding away in switch stance (opposite foot forward from your normal stance) on the new tack.
Why it works: Removing the foot switch removes one entire moving part from the maneuver, which makes it much easier to keep the foil flying and land the turn cleanly. Many riders use this as a stepping stone toward flying gybes, then add the foot switch back in once the carve and wing handling are automatic.
This is the “complete” version most riders eventually aim for: carving through the turn, switching your feet at the point of lowest speed (typically right around when the wing is being flipped), and riding away in your normal stance on the new side. It mirrors how gybes are done in windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Why it works: Timing the foot switch to the slowest, most stable point of the turn (rather than rushing it early or leaving it late) is the key. Many riders find it easiest to think of the switch as a small hop or shuffle rather than a big leap — smaller movements keep the board settled underneath you.
Within any of the methods above, riders generally fall into one of two camps on sequencing. “Board-first” riders initiate the carve and get the turn well underway before touching the wing, releasing and flipping it only once the board has committed to the new direction. “Wing-first” riders start easing and rotating the wing slightly before or during the early carve, so the wing is already partway through its transition by the time the board finishes turning.
Why it works: Board-first is generally easier for intermediates to learn because it isolates the carve. Wing-first becomes valuable later, since starting the wing transition earlier gives you more time to re-power smoothly on the new tack — useful once you’re chasing flying gybes and don’t want a lull in power.
A step beyond a standard gybe: instead of releasing the back hand and rotating the wing low and in front of you, the wing is thrown up and over your head in a full aerial flip mid-turn, landing back in your hands with barely a break in power. It’s flashier and faster than a standard flip, and at higher speeds it can actually help maintain wing tension through the turn.
Why it works: This isn’t a starting point — it’s a natural next step once flying gybes with a standard flip feel automatic. Most riders practice the flip itself on land or in flat water at a standstill before ever attempting it mid-carve.
Keys to Success, Across Every Method
Carry more entry speed than feels natural. Speed is what keeps the foil lifted through the turn. Most failed gybes trace back to entering too slow, not to poor technique mid-turn.
Make the carve progressive, not sudden. A smooth, building arc keeps the foil loaded evenly. A sharp, late turn shocks the foil and is a common cause of breaching or spinning out.
Look and rotate your shoulders early. Turn your head and shoulders toward the new direction before your feet and hips follow. Your body will naturally guide the board and the wing through the transition.
Depower the wing smoothly before releasing it. Ease the back hand out gradually rather than letting go abruptly — a sudden release can destabilize your balance right when you need it most.
Keep your knees bent through the whole turn. Stiff legs transmit every bump and speed change straight into your balance. Soft knees absorb them.
Isolate before you link. Practice the carve on its own, the wing flip on its own (even standing still in shallow water), and the foot switch on its own before trying to chain all three together at speed.
